Crypto Market Slumps to 2-Year Low as Spot Trading Volumes Plummet
The crypto market is experiencing its quietest stretch in over two years, with spot trading volume on major centralized exchanges (CEXs) plummeting to a 25-month low. According to recent data, the monthly spot trading volume across CEXs has declined by 60% from August's high of $2.36 trillion and 63% from its all-time peak in December 2024.
The drop can be attributed in part to Bitcoin's prolonged period of stability between $60,000 and $70,000, which has led to a decrease in retail trader participation. In April 2026, volumes slipped another 3.5% from March, suggesting the downtrend may not have reached its floor yet.
Derivatives trading continues to dominate CEX activity, making up over 70% of total volume. This indicates that institutional or professional traders are now driving market activity rather than retail speculators chasing momentum. Smaller exchanges face a bleak outlook as overall liquidity contracts aggressively.
