Crypto Market Surges $112B as Bitcoin Reclaims $81K
The crypto market experienced a significant surge on September 3, adding over $112 billion in value as Bitcoin reclaimed the $81,000 mark. The recovery was driven by a decline in US government bond yields and comments from Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller that eased fears of an imminent interest-rate increase.
In his remarks at a Reuters event, Waller stated that he could support keeping interest rates unchanged at the September meeting if inflation continues to cool. This statement provided some relief for investors who were concerned about rising borrowing costs, leading to a decline in US Treasury yields and a weakening of the dollar.
The changes in bond yields and the dollar's value have a direct impact on cryptocurrencies. Lower yields make safer interest-paying investments less attractive, while a weaker dollar makes Bitcoin cheaper for buyers using other currencies. As a result, assets like cryptocurrencies typically see positive movements in such scenarios.
Bitcoin led the broader crypto recovery, rising 4.91% from its daily opening price of approximately $77,307 to reach a daily high near $81,392. The total crypto market capitalization increased by 4.35% to $2.7 trillion, adding around $112.4 billion, with the total market capitalization excluding stablecoins rising by 5.05% to $2.42 trillion.
