Crypto Market Surges as Clarity Act Fails to Advance in Senate
The crypto market experienced a significant boost after the Clarity Act stalled in the Senate. The bill's failure to advance defied expectations that it would negatively impact sentiment, leading to a nearly 11% increase in total crypto market capitalization since the Senate vote on September 15.
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan argues that the collapse of the Clarity Act leaves room for regulators to adopt faster and more favorable rules for stablecoins, exchanges, and tokenized securities. According to Hougan, one example is stablecoin rewards, which would have been barred under the final version of the bill but are still allowed under the current GENIUS Act framework.
The SEC has also taken action after the Senate vote, issuing a five-year innovation exemption for limited trading of tokenized U.S. stocks through onchain platforms and clarifying that announcing a token buyback does not automatically imply securities status.
