Crypto Markets Post Best August Since 2017 as Bitcoin Dominance Remains Elevated
Crypto markets experienced a significant shift in August 2026, with almost everything rising as Bitcoin posted its third-best August on record. The market's participation widened, and for the first time this year, most of the top 100 assets closed higher, led by Bitcoin's 25% gain and Ethereum's 32.5% surge.
According to CryptoRank, 70 out of 84 non-stablecoin assets in the current top 100 closed the month higher, with a share of 83%, the widest of the year. This marks a significant contrast from June, where only 13% of those same assets rose while 87% fell.
The market's shift was driven by an abrupt turn in sentiment during the second half of August, which caught traders off guard. The Fear & Greed Index, which had held below 51 for 217 consecutive days, suddenly crossed into Greed and reached 74 on August 25, its highest reading since October 2025.
External demand played a key role in the market's rebound, with US buying evident from the Coinbase Premium Index moving briefly above zero. The US Treasury's announcement to double the maximum size of long-end liquidity-support buyback operations also provided a catalyst for the market's rise.
