Crypto Market's Stability Masks Weakening Breadth
The crypto market is approaching the weekend with a mixed picture. On one hand, total capitalization remains near $2.892 trillion, and the reconstructed weekly screen is +0.20%. On the other hand, most assets are lower, with 63 of the top 100 falling over the past week.
The largest assets, particularly Bitcoin, are helping to prop up the overall market. Bitcoin's modest positive return of +0.64% over the past week is contributing to the aggregate's stability, despite the fact that it holds only 58.92% of total market capitalization.
However, beneath the surface, there are signs of weakness. The clean-screen median return is -1.62%, and the payments, established memes, and privacy assets sectors are all underperforming. AAVE is an exception, with a +17.28% return over the past week, but its outlier gain does not necessarily signal a broader DeFi rotation.
The coming sessions will test whether the resilience of the largest assets can attract wider participation or remain isolated. If the large assets supporting the cap-weighted result encounter resistance, the rest of the market offers no obvious replacement.
