Crypto Mom Hester Peirce to Depart SEC October 2 Amid Regulatory Changes

Hester Peirce, known as 'Crypto Mom,' will leave her position at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 2 after her term ends. She posted a resignation letter on X announcing her departure. Peirce has been a vocal advocate for deregulation in the crypto industry, consistently opposing aggressive enforcement policies under former chairmen Jay Clayton and Gary Gensler.

She gained the opportunity to participate directly in rulemaking after the Donald Trump administration took office and began leading the SEC's dedicated crypto task force. Her work at the task force included policy statements and guidance on mining, staking, and meme coins. Peirce established a definitional framework for classifying different types of crypto assets and determining regulatory jurisdiction.

Her most significant achievement is the 'Innovation Exemption,' which allows a five-year temporary grace period for testing tokenized securities issuance and distribution. This measure aims to establish a permanent regime based on results from this temporary period. Peirce plans to join Regent University School of Law as an associate professor after her departure.
