Crypto Outperforms Stocks on Breadth Metrics Despite Still-High Prices
Despite the S&P 500 index hovering near record highs, most of its constituents are trading below their 200-day moving averages. In contrast, a significant number of top-100 cryptocurrencies are above this key trend measure.
Crypto analyst Scott Melker reported that 88 out of the top 100 cryptocurrencies are currently above their 200-day MAs. Bitcoin and Ethereum are among them, and most of these assets also hold above their shorter-term trends.
According to Melker, this combination is a 'clean, bullish configuration across the board.' He pointed out that the distance between current crypto prices and previous highs contrasts with equities, which have already priced in substantial good news. The market watcher noted that weak breadth in stocks near highs has historically been a yellow flag.
Melker emphasized that strong breadth in crypto while prices remain far from peaks is the opposite setup. He warned that figures measuring how many assets are trading above a long-term average only offer a snapshot of market participation, not a guarantee that either market will continue in its current direction.
