Crypto Perpetual Futures Volumes Surpass $347 Billion, Disrupting Traditional Markets
The convergence of traditional and crypto markets is accelerating, but it's not as simple as having one exchange for everything. Coinbase and Kraken have separate structures for their conventional and crypto services, showing that regulatory status and protections differ even if assets appear together in the application.
Perpetual futures, a product familiar to crypto traders, may be more disruptive than tokenized stocks. These contracts offer synthetic price exposure without requiring ownership of the underlying asset or a conventional expiration date.
The trading volumes for perpetual futures tied to real-world assets have reached $347 billion in May 2023, with approximately $34 billion in monthly tokenized-equity perpetual volume across tracked exchanges. This is still small compared to traditional equity markets but shows a growing trend.
