Crypto Prices Plummet After Strong US Jobs Report Pushes Rate Hike Odds
Crypto prices took a hit after the US jobs report revealed stronger-than-expected employment growth in August. The unexpected surge pushed Bitcoin below $80,000 and Ethereum under $2,500.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 162,000 in August, beating economists' expectations of only 56,000 new jobs. This strong labor market data gives the Federal Reserve more room to focus on inflation without needing to support employment with lower interest rates.
As a result, short-term Treasury yields are likely to rise, making government debt more competitive with riskier assets like cryptocurrencies. A stronger dollar can also make dollar-denominated assets more expensive for buyers outside the US and reduce liquidity in the crypto market.
The Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates is now more likely to be a 25-basis-point increase, according to futures markets. The August Consumer Price Index (CPI) will be crucial in determining the Fed's next move, with a firm CPI reading reinforcing expectations for a rate hike and potentially putting further pressure on crypto prices.
