Nine major cryptocurrencies are trading below their prices from one year ago, according to data as of September 9, 2026. Bitcoin is down 29%, while Ethereum and Cardano have fallen even more sharply. This date marks a significant deadline in Germany for tax purposes, where losses on crypto assets purchased a year ago can no longer be used to offset gains if not realized by this deadline.

Investors holding crypto bought in autumn 2025 should consider selling before the anniversary to preserve tax benefits, as losses realized after one year are not recognized for tax offset. This rule applies even to staked or lent coins, and losses can only offset gains from private disposals within the same year, not other income types.

Most major cryptocurrencies saw price declines, with Binance Coin (BNB) down 4.18%, Chainlink (LINK) down 6%, and Polkadot (DOT) down 10.51%. Bitcoin's price dropped about 4.6% from its September 3 peak of $82,283 to trade near $78,500 on September 9.
