Crypto Projects Spend Record $6.38 Billion on Token Buybacks This Year
The cryptocurrency market has seen an unprecedented level of token buybacks this year, according to data from Allium Labs. The total value of tokens repurchased by projects so far in 2023 stands at $638 million, surpassing last year's figure of $545 million and dwarfing the mere $366,000 spent on token buybacks for all of 2024.
The majority of these buybacks are being driven by just two projects: Hyperliquid, a perpetual contract trading platform, and pump.fun, a meme cryptocurrency issuer. Together, they account for nearly 90% of the total amount repurchased.
Elton Shehdula, research lead at Allium Labs, suggests that token buybacks can serve as an 'image incentive' to demonstrate confidence in a project's own tokens, and by reducing supply, provide another lever to support token prices. Hyperliquid has gone further than most, using 99% of its trading fees to repurchase and burn HYPE tokens since launching in December 2024. With a total value of $1.3 billion in tokens burned so far, the price of HYPE has risen by 70% over the past year.
Another notable example is Sky Protocol, a decentralized finance platform that has repurchased $26 million worth of SKY tokens. Co-founder Rune Christensen notes that this move helps ensure decision-makers remain aligned with long-term success by incentivizing them to prioritize token holders' interests.
