Crypto Regulation Bill Defeated in Senate Despite Trump and Industry Backing

Share

The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a bill championed by President Trump and crypto executives, suffered a stinging defeat in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday. The bill aimed to establish regulations for the cryptocurrency industry but faced entrenched Democratic opposition. Despite having passed the House last year, the bill failed to clear a key procedural hurdle, requiring 60 'yes' votes but only receiving 49.

The Clarity Act would have formally split oversight of the crypto sector between the SEC and CFTC, with the CFTC playing a larger role. However, critics argued that this would give the industry too much leniency without adequate safeguards. Ryan VanGrack, vice chair of Coinbase, stated that 'tens of millions of Americans are investing in products that don't have clear regulatory oversight' and that regulation is necessary.

The bill's defeat leaves its future uncertain, with the crypto industry and its backers in the Senate needing to decide whether to try again at a later date. Democrats opposed the bill due to concerns over an ethics clause intended to prevent presidents and other elected officials from profiting from the crypto industry while in office.
