Crypto Regulation Bill Hits Roadblock in Senate
The Crypto Clarity Act has stalled in the Senate after falling short of the necessary votes to advance. On Tuesday, the legislation received 49 votes but required 60 to move forward. The bill aimed to establish a national regulatory framework for digital assets, which would have provided legal certainty for crypto firms and added consumer protections.
Three Republicans broke with their party to oppose the measure: Senator Susan Collins of Maine, Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, and Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas. Delaware Democrat Chris Coons did not vote. Senator Thom Tillis (North Carolina) voted 'no' but entered a motion to reconsider, preserving the possibility of bringing the measure back for another vote.
Supporters argued that the bill would have addressed concerns about President Donald Trump's extensive crypto investments and his family's involvement in cryptocurrency businesses. However, Democrats united against the measure after negotiations over ethics provisions failed to produce an agreement.
