Crypto Scammers Hijack Microsoft's Official X Account
Crypto scammers hijacked Microsoft's official X account on Thursday, using it to promote a Clippy-themed cryptocurrency.
The attackers, who have not yet been identified, used the compromised account to share a message from the @clippymsftcto account and replace Microsoft's profile picture with an image of Clippy.
A second account involved in the incident continued to promote the $Clippy token, claiming its liquidity pool was paired with MSFT stock.
Microsoft confirmed that its account had been taken over and that the unauthorized posts had been removed. The company's spokesperson stated that 'We have confirmed unauthorized access to our account on X, including posts that did not come from Microsoft.'
The attackers' methods of gaining access are still unknown, but they could have used various tactics such as phishing, SIM swapping, or compromised third-party tools.
