Crypto Scamster Accused of Luring $165M in Ponzi Scheme

Share

An alleged cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme has been charged in the US, with Edward Zimbardi accused of scamming over $165 million from investors.

The scheme, called The Crypto Program, promised investors a guaranteed 25% monthly return by buying advertising packages. However, prosecutors allege that more than $34 million was used for risky foreign-exchange trades, and at least $10 million was spent on personal expenses, including property and luxury vehicles.

A Ponzi scheme works by using new investment to pay returns to earlier investors, rather than generating revenue through legitimate means. The scheme relies on the confidence of its investors, who are often lured in by promises of unusually high returns.

Crypto has provided a fertile ground for Ponzi schemes due to its complex technology and large price movements, making it easy for scammers to create convincing stories about exceptional returns.
