Crypto Selloff Reveals Different Risks for Coinbase, Circle, and Strategy Inc

The recent selloff in cryptocurrencies has had different effects on three businesses: Coinbase, Circle Internet Group, and Strategy Inc.

On September 15, the US Senate failed to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act, which would have divided oversight between the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The bill aimed to create federal rules for digital-asset intermediaries but did not secure the necessary 60 votes.

As a result of this setback, Bitcoin fell in price, while Coinbase dropped around 10%, Circle around 11%, and Strategy Inc around 5%.

Coinbase, which runs a crypto exchange and financial platform, is particularly exposed to clearer market rules. Trading remains important for the company, but it is expanding into derivatives, stablecoins, and payments. The CLARITY Act could affect what can trade on Coinbase's platforms, how they register, and how comfortable institutions feel participating.

Circle Internet Group, on the other hand, has more regulatory clarity around its core product, USDC (USD Coin). The company benefits from wider use of digital dollars, not just rising token prices or speculative trading. Its key drivers are USDC adoption and interest rates, which can increase what those reserves can earn.

Strategy Inc's investment case is dominated by its Bitcoin treasury and the financing used to build it. The company holds over 843,000 Bitcoins alongside billions of dollars of debt and preferred shares. The key question is not whether CLARITY helps Strategy directly but how regulation affects Bitcoin demand and price.
