Crypto Shakeout Accelerates as Four Industry Players Exit Within One Week
Four prominent cryptocurrency firms have exited the market within a week, sparking concerns about the industry's sustainability. Movement Labs, a blockchain network developer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after listing modest assets against significant liabilities.
The company had been valued at several billion dollars in early 2025 but saw its fortunes change with the launch of the MOVE token. Controversy surrounding market-making arrangements and exchange delistings led to a collapse in investor confidence, leaving the project unable to recover.
Storj Labs, another blockchain network operator, is also undergoing Chapter 11 restructuring. However, unlike Movement Labs, Storj continues to serve customers while addressing legacy financial obligations. The company's proposal allocates ownership among management, investors, and token holders, a relatively uncommon approach that could establish an important precedent.
BitMEX, a pioneering exchange in perpetual futures contracts, is voluntarily winding down despite maintaining sufficient assets to meet customer obligations. Parent company HDR Global Trading announced the closure as an orderly business decision rather than a financial collapse.
BitMart's shutdown has raised governance questions after its global CEO claimed he was informed of his employment ending shortly before the public announcement and had no role in the decision-making process leading to the shutdown.
