Crypto Stocks' Correlation to Bitcoin Reveals Industry Shift
Crypto stocks' performance is being evaluated by analyst Tom Lee in his latest report. He analyzed 17 large-cap crypto stocks, all with market caps over $2 billion, and their correlation to Bitcoin's price over a 90-day period.
The results show that Strategy topped the list with an 78% correlation to Bitcoin, while Core Scientific had a much lower correlation of just 16%. This divergence is attributed to the growing trend of crypto mining companies shifting their focus from direct cryptocurrency mining to artificial intelligence data center operations.
Core Scientific's revenue breakdown for the quarter ending in June showed that $136.7 million came from AI hosting and infrastructure services, compared to $21.5 million from direct cryptocurrency mining. TeraWulf also presented a similar breakdown, generating $21 million from leasing high-performance computing capacity and $13 million from block extraction.
The industry is expected to assess the full impact of this operational pivot during the upcoming quarterly corporate earnings season, when revenue figures for high-performance computing contracts will be updated.
