Crypto Surges on Short Squeeze, Treasury Buybacks, and Dollar Decline
The cryptocurrency market has experienced a significant surge in recent days, with Bitcoin's price increasing by 8.5% in the past 24 hours to trade at $75,311.32.
This increase comes as traders who had been betting on prices to fall further were forced to exit their positions, resulting in approximately $3.5 billion in leveraged cryptocurrency positions being liquidated between August 20th and 21st, with the majority of these positions being short positions, according to The Kobeissi Letter.
The wider liquidation wave reportedly affected over 190,000 traders, causing a significant increase in prices across the board. Bitcoin was moving sideways for a long time and struggling to break above the resistance level of $65k before this sudden spike.
In addition to price action, the US Treasury's decision to expand its purchases of longer-dated Treasury bonds through its current buyback program has contributed to the market's increase. The Treasury announced plans to raise the $2 billion cap on some buyback operations to at least $4 billion, which is significant because the yield on the US Treasury's 30-year note recently increased to about 5.337%, the highest level since 2008.
