Crypto Surges Past Nasdaq With Bitcoin and Top Altcoins Taking Lead
Crypto has made a remarkable comeback in recent months, turning what was once a significant deficit into a lead over traditional assets like the Nasdaq. According to Glassnode's cross-asset return table, Bitcoin (BTC) fell 44% over the past year while the Nasdaq climbed 24%, making crypto the only asset group still sitting in negative territory. However, over the last 60 days, BTC gained 2% while the Nasdaq lost 3%, a 73-point swing in relative performance.
Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL), which also showed significant losses over the past year, have since outrun the Nasdaq. ETH lost 56% and SOL lost 58% last year, but gained 12% and 10% respectively over the last 60 days. This puts ETH 15 points above the Nasdaq and SOL 13 points above it.
NYDIG's research argued that crypto trading demand weakened as the menu of competing speculative bets expanded, which explains Bitcoin's one-year performance. However, with the widening decoupling from equities, BlackRock's digital assets head Robert Mitchnick called this a constructive sign for Bitcoin's role as a diversifier.
While some still caution that ETF inflows and spot volumes need to recover alongside crypto outperformance, the current trend suggests that Bitcoin may be slowly regaining its momentum. Whether this is a lasting rotation of capital remains to be seen, but it's clear that crypto has made significant strides in recent months.
