Crypto Tax Rules Vary Widely Across Countries, Investors Must Understand Local Laws

Share

The tax season is upon us, and for cryptocurrency investors, it's essential to understand how different countries classify and tax digital assets. The rules vary significantly from one country to another, making it a complex task to file taxes correctly.

For individual non-business crypto investors, the classification and taxation of digital assets depend on their residency and citizenship. For instance, India treats Virtual Digital Assets (VDAs) as taxable income at a flat rate of 30%, plus a 1% tax deducted at source (TDS). In contrast, the US classifies cryptocurrencies as property, taxing gains on sale and income when earned.

Canada's approach is unique in that it splits profits into two categories: capital gains, where only half gets taxed, or business income, where all of it does. Australia treats digital assets as a Capital Gains Tax (CGT) asset and taxes staking rewards as ordinary income at the moment they're received.

Staking rewards, airdrops, and wallet transfers are gaining attention from tax authorities, with several countries expanding exchange reporting rules this year. It's crucial for investors to keep accurate records of their transactions and understand what constitutes a taxable event in their country.
