Crypto Taxable Activity Surpasses $457 Billion in 2025, US Dominates
Global on-chain taxable crypto activity reached an estimated $457 billion in 2025, according to Chainalysis. The figure represents combined gains, income from mining, staking, lending, and gambling, as well as crypto-powered payments across six major networks: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Tron, BNB Smart Chain, and Base.
The largest contributor to this total was the US, accounting for $112.6 billion of taxable activity. North America as a whole accounted for $134.6 billion, followed by the European Union at $125.1 billion, and East Asia at $54.7 billion.
In some countries, crypto taxable activity significantly surpassed government finances. In Portugal, $2 billion in taxable crypto activity was equivalent to 201% of the country's $1 billion deficit in 2025. Meanwhile, in Nigeria, $4.4 billion of taxable crypto activity represented 12.3% of the country's $35.5 billion in government revenue.
Chainalysis' methodology excludes activity on centralized exchanges and some transaction types, so this figure represents a lower boundary. The company also found that only 14% of on-chain taxable activity was covered by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF), which requires participating service providers to report customer transaction data to tax authorities.
