Crypto Token Buybacks Reach Record $638 Million Amid SEC Clarity
Crypto projects have reached a record high in token buybacks, spending around $638 million through late August this year. This is up from $545 million during the same period last year, according to data from Allium Labs.
The majority of these buybacks come from two projects: Hyperliquid and Pump.fun. Together, they account for nearly 90% of the total, with Hyperliquid alone responsible for approximately $370 million in buybacks.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has recently clarified its stance on token buybacks, stating that a project's announcement of buying back its own tokens does not necessarily imply an investment contract. This ruling is part of a broader effort to establish clearer guidelines for cryptocurrency regulation.
