Crypto Transactions Become Increasingly Traceable Amid Growing Infrastructure

Cryptocurrency transactions are becoming increasingly traceable as governments and exchanges build infrastructure to connect on-chain activity to real-world identities.

Public blockchains, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, remain decentralized but the intelligence layer surrounding them is growing more interconnected. This infrastructure can track transactions between wallets, exchanges, bridges, and other blockchain services.

The scale of illicit cryptocurrency activity has driven governments to invest heavily in these capabilities. According to Chainalysis' 2026 Crypto Crime Report, illicit addresses received at least $154 billion during 2025, a 162% year-over-year increase.

Stablecoins have become a major part of global transaction activity and regulators are increasing scrutiny. Stablecoins accounted for approximately 84% of illicit cryptocurrency transaction volume in 2025, according to Chainalysis. Sanctions evasion is one area receiving particular attention, with the ruble-backed A7A5 stablecoin processing over $93 billion in transactions.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has published recommendations addressing stablecoins and peer-to-peer transactions involving unhosted wallets. The report encourages governments and private-sector companies to strengthen monitoring and risk controls around stablecoin transactions.
