Crypto Whale Activity Surges to Three-Year High as Bitcoin Nears $86K
Crypto exchange whale activity has reached a three-year high, according to data from KuCoin. The 30-day smoothed average of the Exchange Whale Ratio is near its peak over the past three years, coinciding with Bitcoin’s price push toward $86,000. The ratio measures the share of exchange inflows coming from the largest wallets, and its recent rise suggests whale-sized deposits are growing as a portion of total exchange flow.
The smoothed trend has climbed from roughly 0.2 in 2024-2025 to between 0.3 and 0.35 recently, among the highest sustained readings in three years. Historically, elevated whale ratio readings appeared before and around prior price peaks, such as the 2024 run toward $73,000 and the 2025 run toward $126,000. Large holders moving coins to exchanges often precedes distribution, as deposits typically signal selling pressure.
However, the current rise in whale activity is occurring while Bitcoin’s price is also climbing, rather than after a top has formed. This divergence raises questions about whether the pattern will repeat or if the deposits will be absorbed by institutional demand, such as ETF inflows. The ratio alone cannot distinguish between selling pressure and other actions like custody changes, OTC settlements, or collateral posting, so caution is advised in interpreting the data.
