Crypto Winter's Silver Lining: Bitwise Sees a Healthier Cycle
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan says the current crypto downturn is fundamentally healthier than previous bear markets due to stronger infrastructure, a favorable regulatory environment, and emerging trillion-dollar stablecoin and tokenization markets.
Hougan compared the current cycle to the past, noting that in 2018 Bitcoin traded at $3,000 and Ethereum was 'a global computer' with no applications and limited throughput. In contrast, today's market has seen stablecoins reach $3 trillion, tokenization markets grow to $200 trillion, a positive regulatory climate, and better tokenomics.
The numbers support Hougan's argument, as the current decline of 49% from just below $4.4 trillion in October to $2.23 trillion on February 6 is less severe than the 88% drop in 2018 or the roughly 73% decline in 2022.
However, not everyone agrees that the market has turned a corner. Alphractal founder Joao Wedson noted that long-term holders are still in profit on average, but warned that when this metric turns negative, it can mark the phase of maximum market depression and signal the start of a new bull run.
