Crypto Wrench Attacks Steal Over $30 Million in 2026

Share

A surge in violent crypto attacks has resulted in over $30 million stolen from victims so far this year, according to Chainalysis. This represents a sharp increase compared to last year, when approximately $58 million was successfully extracted through similar methods. Despite the rise in incidents, attackers are becoming less successful, with only 26% of documented violent theft attempts resulting in payments as of late June.

France has become the epicenter of these so-called 'crypto wrench attacks', recording 19 publicly known incidents in 2025 and another 30 through mid-2026. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that authorities have documented more than 70 crypto-related violent incidents by late June.

A major data breach may have contributed to the surge, Chainalysis suggests. A French tax official was allegedly involved in stealing and selling information about wealthy crypto holders, including names, addresses, phone numbers, holdings, and tax records. This led to an increase in attacks, with France recording approximately 1.9 incidents per month in 2025 compared to around 4.6 per month during the first half of this year.

French authorities responded with a major organized-crime crackdown that reportedly resulted in around 200 arrests, 88 indictments, and 75 suspects being placed in pretrial detention by mid-year. Home invasions are becoming increasingly prevalent, accounting for 37% of attacks through mid-2026, up from just 14% in 2025. Kidnappings remain the most common form of violent crypto attack.

Attackers are also targeting relatives of crypto holders, with family members or acquaintances involved in roughly 25% to 30% of cases as of early this year. In France, more than 40% of incidents reportedly targeted someone connected to the crypto holder rather than the holder directly.
