Crypto Wrench Attacks Surge to Record Levels in 2026
Crypto Wrench Attacks Surge to Record Levels in 2026, Over $30M Stolen.
According to a report by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, physical attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders are on pace for their worst year on record. Between January and June 2026, more than $30 million was stolen in 46 documented violent crypto attacks.
The report found that kidnappings remain the most common type of attack, but home invasions have become increasingly popular, rising to 37% of documented incidents from 26% in 2023. Chainalysis also noted that attackers are now targeting relatives and acquaintances to pressure victims into transferring cryptocurrency.
France has emerged as a major center for wrench attacks, with 30 incidents recorded through mid-2026. This increase appears linked to an alleged breach involving tax records that exposed information about high-net-worth crypto holders.
