Cryptocurrency Investment Industry Hides Hidden Risks in Labeling
The cryptocurrency investment industry has become increasingly complex, with various products such as ETPs, ETFs, and Trusts emerging. However, a closer look reveals that these terms often carry different implications for investors.
ETPs (Exchange-Traded Products) constitute the broadest category, encompassing open-ended exchange-traded funds, tradeable debt notes, and hybrid vehicles. In Europe, physical-backed Bitcoin products are registered as ETPs with segregated collateral, isolating underlying assets from the issuer's balance sheet.
In contrast, ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds) describe open-ended investment funds with a creation and redemption mechanism operated by authorized participants. The defining characteristic of an ETF is its continuous arbitrage capacity, keeping the market price aligned with net asset value (NAV).
Crypto investment Trusts operate as closed-end funds, with a fixed number of outstanding shares. The quote responds to supply and demand in the secondary market, generating discounts or premiums to NAV that can persist for months.
