Cryptocurrency Kiosk Scams Cost Texans Over $56 Million
Texans lost an estimated $56.8 million to cryptocurrency kiosk scams in 2025, making them the state with the highest reported losses. This figure is part of a larger trend, as the FBI received over 10,956 complaints about these kiosks across the US in 2024, resulting in $246.7 million in losses.
The Texas House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security, Public Safety & Veterans' Affairs met to discuss financial influences from foreign countries and their effect on Texans, pointing out that cryptocurrency-related activity was a major concern.
Kelley Currie, a geopolitical advisory firm partner, testified that scamming is now treated by INTERPOL as an industry comparable in size to drug trafficking and human trafficking. She also raised concerns about the role of Chinese transnational criminal organizations in these financial crimes.
