Cryptocurrency Market Rebounds as Financial Events Pass
Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies experienced a sharp rebound in the second half of last week as market participants became less uncertain about upcoming financial and regulatory events.
The week began with a decline in cryptocurrency prices due to concerns over the development pace of next-generation AI models. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SpaceX/xAI CEO Elon Musk, and others publicly expressed support for slowing down the development of these models from a safety perspective.
However, on September 15th, the US Senate failed to pass the CLARITY Act, a comprehensive digital asset market structure bill. The law would have included provisions for preventing public officials' potential conflicts of interest related to cryptocurrency investments. Despite the failure to pass the bill, its proponents plan to reintroduce it in future sessions.
The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points on September 20th, as expected, but the market's focus shifted to the Fed's future policy stance. With most policymakers anticipating at least one more rate hike this year, the market became less bearish on cryptocurrencies.
