Cryptocurrency Market Sees Downturn with Bitcoin Down 3%
The cryptocurrency market is experiencing a downturn, with Bitcoin down 3% this week as of September 16. Ether and XRP also declined, falling 2% and 7%, respectively.
Bitcoin has been particularly affected, down approximately 13% year-to-date and sitting about 39% below its October 2025 record high. This is not the first time Bitcoin has experienced a significant drop; in fact, it's had several fluctuations since its inception in early 2009.
Ether, the native cryptocurrency run on the Ethereum blockchain platform, has also seen a decline, down approximately 19% year-to-date and roughly 50% below its record close from August 2025. XRP, owned by Ripple and launched in 2012, is currently down around 29% year-to-date and sits about 63% below its October 2025 record high.
An index chart has been created to compare the pricing histories of these three cryptocurrencies, with a logarithmic scale used on the y-axis to better illustrate relative percentage changes and long-term growth trends.
