Cryptocurrencies took a significant hit on August 28, with Bitcoin pulling back from its recent high and dropping below $80,000. The cryptocurrency market as a whole lost 1.6% of its value, wiping out over $100 billion in market capitalization.

BTC's price fell by over 2%, causing it to lose the coveted $80,000 mark. Ethereum (ETH) also declined, breaking below $2,500 with a 2% drop. Binance Coin (BNB) and Ripple (XRP) suffered similar losses, falling 2.4% and 5% respectively.

The sharp pullback in the market was triggered by Bitcoin's rapid surge to above $81,000, which led to a wave of profit-taking and leverage liquidations. Over $600 million in liquidations occurred over the past 24 hours, with both long and short positions suffering equally.
