Cryptocurrency Market Value Tops $3 Trillion as Bitcoin Surges
The total value of the cryptocurrency market has surpassed $3 trillion for the first time since January. This milestone was reached after Bitcoin surged to a new high of $87,381 before settling at $85,100 on Tuesday.
This surge in price led to an increase in open interest in perpetual futures, reaching nearly $160 billion, according to Coinglass. This has driven leverage across digital tokens to its highest point since late October last year.
Rising open interest alongside the unwinding of short positions suggests that traders are replacing bearish bets with fresh leveraged exposure, which could exacerbate price movements.
Market participants caution that rapid leverage accumulation without equivalent spot volume can destabilize prices. Rachael Lucas, an analyst at BTC Markets, notes that 'a squeeze normally destroys open interest,' but in this case, positions are being replaced immediately.
