Physical attacks on cryptocurrency holders have increased significantly in the first half of 2026. According to CertiK, there were 52 wrench attacks during this period, resulting in a total financial exposure of $124.2 million. This represents an 11.8-fold increase from the same period last year, with a growth rate of 1,080% year-over-year.

Unlike online exploits, wrench attacks use physical violence, kidnapping, threats, or other forms of coercion to force victims to transfer digital assets or reveal access credentials. Chainalysis has also reported a growing connection between cryptocurrency ownership and violent crime.

In related news, Bitcoin struggled to break above $65,000, falling 2% to $63,750 after another attempt was rejected. Ethereum whales accumulated 5.6 million ETH during a buying period that began in mid-2025, with major holders increasing their exposure despite changing market conditions.

The XRP Ledger has moved closer to adding confidential transfers for Multi-Purpose Tokens after developers merged the required support into the rippled client's develop branch.
