Cryptocurrency vs Virtual Currency: What's the Difference?
Digital currencies are flooding online platforms, but they don't all work the same way. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin operate differently from virtual currencies used in games or social casinos.
Virtual currency existed before cryptocurrency. Games were using their own currencies years before Bitcoin arrived. These game currencies are designed to represent progress, access features, or manage the internal economy within a closed system.
Cryptocurrency works differently. Ownership is recorded on a distributed blockchain, and users can transfer it between compatible wallets. The key question when evaluating any digital currency is what it can actually do.
Can users move it outside the platform? Is ownership recorded publicly on a blockchain? Does a single company control the currency and its supply?
The distinction between digital currencies is particularly important in online entertainment, where familiar financial language is often used for systems designed primarily around gameplay. Blockchain-based gaming introduced another model, allowing digital assets to be recorded on-chain and held in separate wallets.
