Cryptographers Bypass Hardware Security Module, Warn of Quantum Computing Threat
A recent breakthrough in cryptography has sparked concern among cryptocurrency owners, but experts say there's no reason to panic.
Researchers from the University of California San Diego and INRIA successfully bypassed a high-end hardware security module, allowing them to forge digital signatures without physically accessing the device or obtaining the private key.
The breakthrough targeted the classic RSA algorithm, which is not used by most major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. These platforms rely on elliptic curve cryptography, making them immune to this specific attack.
However, the researchers' findings do serve as a warning for the IT security sector: traditional encryption methods are becoming increasingly outdated in the face of advancing technologies like quantum computing.
