CryptoRank: Majority of Former Top-100 Cryptocurrencies Now Defunct
A new analysis from CryptoRank reveals that nearly three-quarters of cryptocurrencies that once reached the top 100 by market capitalization have ceased operating. The study examined 1,539 digital assets and found that 71.9% are now defunct, meaning they have daily trading volume below $10,000 for 90 consecutive days and have been delisted from major exchanges.
CryptoRank projects that 62% of current top-100 cryptocurrencies could cease operating within five years, and 84.7% within ten years. The average lifespan across all cryptocurrencies analyzed was estimated at approximately two years and four months.
The reasons behind these failures are varied but often include a lack of sustained user adoption, regulatory pressures, and the highly competitive nature of the blockchain space.
CryptoRank noted that entering the top 100 by market capitalization does not guarantee long-term potential. The study underscores the high-risk nature of cryptocurrency investing, particularly for lesser-known altcoins.
