Ethereum Community Rages Over Plan to Cut Validator Rewards
The Ethereum community is engaged in a heated debate over EIP-8363, a proposal that aims to reduce the network's consensus-layer issuance rewards for validators as the staked amount approaches 50% of the total ETH supply.
The proposal, submitted by six researchers including EthCC founder Jérôme de Tychey and Ethereum Foundation’s Justin Drake, attempts to install a 'yield downward slope' for the growing staking ratio. This would mean that consensus-layer issuance rewards for validators would be fully offset when the staked amount reaches 50% of total ETH supply.
The authors argue that this is necessary to prevent the network from becoming too centralized and to reduce the dilution pressure on un-staked ETH, which is continuously diluted by new issuance. They also hope to allow native ETH to once again become a more competitive neutral asset.
However, the proposal has sparked intense opposition from various stakeholders in the community. Aave founder Stani Kulechov believes that consensus-layer staking yield that varies with the staking ratio and ultimately approaches zero would weaken the cash flow predictability valued by institutions allocating into ETH.
