Crypto's Midterm Gamble: Will Big Spending Pay Off in Washington?
Crypto's influence on US politics is growing exponentially ahead of the midterm elections. The industry has already spent big in previous election cycles, and this time it's going all in, with an expected budget that could rival even Elon Musk-sized amounts.
According to Open Secrets, which tracks campaign financing, crypto has been increasing its spending, particularly since the 2024 presidential election. This surge is unusual for midterms, as they typically involve less spending than presidential years.
The industry's strategy involves targeting candidates that it considers hostile and knocking them out in primaries. In the last cycle, crypto successfully eliminated several Democrats who were skeptical of its influence or even favorable to it. Then, in the general election, it spent heavily on both sides of the aisle, with notable successes in Ohio.
Despite having no real economic impact, only 2% of Americans use crypto for non-speculative transactions, according to the Federal Reserve, crypto has become a significant force in Washington, known for its ability to intimidate politicians and sway policy decisions. In fact, the industry's lobbying efforts have been so effective that even Senator Chuck Schumer warned his colleagues against offending Fairshake, a prominent crypto lobby group.
But what does this mean for the current election cycle? With Democrats poised for a potential blue wave in both the House and Senate, the crypto industry is betting on a more favorable environment. However, if the Democrats do succeed in sweeping both chambers, it could spell trouble for crypto's interests.
