Cuomo Blames Partisan Politics for CLARITY Act's Collapse
Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stated that the CLARITY Act's failure was due to partisan politics rather than any irreconcilable policy disputes. He argued that the bill had a clear goal of providing clarity in the crypto industry, but when it failed, ambiguity and unpredictability took over.
Cuomo pointed out that no differences in the bill were insurmountable, framing its failure as election-year maneuvering. He expressed hope that a lame-duck Congress could still pass the CLARITY Act once political temperatures cool after the midterms.
Cuomo also mentioned his own record of passing New York's BitLicense framework in 2015, one of the first state-level crypto regulatory regimes. However, he acknowledged that the license became too stringent over time, pushing companies like Kraken and Bitfinex out of the state.
Regarding the current political climate, Cuomo compared it to 1994, when Democrats lost the House and Senate two years after Clinton's election. He argued that voters are seeking balance after two years of Republican dominance, but warned that the crypto industry failed to mobilize its own voter base during the CLARITY Act debate.
Cuomo emphasized that the industry can't simply rely on political donations to pass legislation and that regulations can be challenged, investigated, and undone far more easily than actual law. He also noted that Bitcoin has fallen sharply after every midterm election since 2010, adding to the uncertainty heading into November 3rd.
