CZ Demands Quantum Upgrade for Crypto Industry Amid Growing Exposure

Changpeng Zhao, former CEO of Binance, has downplayed concerns over quantum computing attacks on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. According to a recent Google whitepaper, 6.9 million BTC face growing exposure to quantum computing attacks that may require fewer resources than previously thought.

The study found that cracking the cryptography behind Bitcoin and Ethereum could require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, compared to earlier estimates of millions. A scenario in which a quantum computer could derive a private key from an exposed public key in roughly nine minutes was also described.

Zhao responded by urging the crypto industry to adopt quantum-resistant algorithms, stating that 'All crypto has to do is upgrade to Quantum-Resistant (Post-Quantum) Algorithms. So, no need to panic.'

However, he noted that executing such a migration across decentralized networks would be difficult due to coordination problems and disagreements over which algorithms to adopt.
