Dashjr's Removal as BIP Editor Sought by Murch Over Failed BIP-110 Proposal

Bitcoin Core developer Mark 'Murch' Erhardt has asked the Bitcoin Development Mailing List to remove Luke Dashjr as BIP Editor due to a dispute over the contentious soft fork proposal, BIP-110. The proposal aimed to restrict non-financial data embedded in Bitcoin transactions but failed to gain enough miner support, with only 2.5% of miners signaling their backing.

The disagreement between Erhardt and Dashjr has been ongoing for weeks, with Erhardt arguing that Dashjr assigned the BIP-110 number and merged it into the repository 'bypassing the coordination and review' typically involved in such changes. This is not the first time Erhardt has raised concerns about Dashjr's control over the BIP process, as he proposed adding four co-editors to share equal authority with Dashjr in April 2024.

Despite the failure of BIP-110, Dashjr defended it on its merits and argued that abandoning the rule would itself amount to a contentious hard fork. The BIP Editors' role is crucial in shaping Bitcoin's development, and this dispute highlights the complexities of the process and the need for coordination among developers.
