Data Aggregators Fail to Boost AI Visibility for Crypto Projects
A recent study by ICODA, in partnership with Semrush, investigated how AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity cite sources when answering queries about cryptocurrencies. The research, which involved over 100 controlled query-runs across both engines, aimed to test the assumption that getting listed on data aggregators such as CoinGecko, CoinMarketCap, and DeFiLlama would increase AI visibility.
The results showed that none of these data aggregators were cited in any of the queries, despite being widely recommended by crypto marketers. Instead, four source types consistently appeared: roundup content, financial media, company websites, and community platforms. These sources were chosen because they matched the query intent and structure, rather than solely relying on authority or brand recognition.
The study found that citation overlap between ChatGPT and Perplexity was not consistent across all query types. For example, both engines independently cited Coin Bureau in roundup queries, but showed no overlap in breaking news or stablecoin safety queries. This suggests that AI engines are optimizing for relevance over authority when citing sources.
The findings have significant implications for crypto marketers who have been relying on outdated advice to boost their AI visibility. By focusing on creating content that matches the query intent and structure, rather than solely trying to get listed on data aggregators, projects can increase their chances of being cited by AI engines.
