Data Center Dividends for Rural Households Proposed by Bitcoin Policy Institute
The Bitcoin Policy Institute has proposed a new mechanism for distributing property tax revenue from AI data centers to rural households. The concept, dubbed 'data center dividends,' would funnel a portion of tax revenue directly into the pockets of residents in hosting communities.
Using Loudoun County, Virginia as a case study, BPI estimates that each household could receive between $4,500 and $8,900 annually. In West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, households could receive between $5,600 and $11,200 annually.
The proposal aims to address domestic opposition to data centers, which has blocked an estimated $23.6 billion in US AI infrastructure projects. By sharing the economic benefits with local residents, BPI hopes to turn data centers from unwanted neighbors into 'golden geese.'
