DCI Warns Kenyans Over Forex, Crypto Scams Behind Flashy Online Lifestyles
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya has warned citizens about online financial scams that use social media displays of wealth to lure victims into fake investment opportunities.
The agency targeted a group known as 'Masharp Boys/Girls,' which posts images and claims of trading profits on platforms like Telegram. These displays often feature cash, luxury cars, expensive drinks, and overseas trips alongside offers linked to forex trading, cryptocurrency, arbitrage, and betting.
The DCI cautioned that such displays do not necessarily reflect actual trading success or wealth. It pointed out that screenshots showing large trading profits are often misleading, as viewers cannot verify whether the trades took place or if the account holder withdrew the money.
The agency also warned about fake trading platforms, cryptocurrency wallets, and phishing links used to trick people into sending deposits or personal information.
