DeepSeek Seeks Record-Breaking Funding Round Amid Centralized Infrastructure Focus
Chinese AI startup DeepSeek is reportedly seeking to raise at least 10 billion yuan in a follow-on funding round, pushing its valuation past $71 billion. This comes just a month after the company closed its first external funding round, which valued it between $52 and $59 billion post-money.
The initial round was led by Tencent, CATL, and founder Liang Wenfeng, who personally contributed 20 billion yuan through a limited partnership that granted investors zero voting rights and a five-year lock-up period.
The funds from the follow-on round will be used to expand DeepSeek's compute power, build out data center capacity, and aggressively recruit talent. This move raises questions about the demand for decentralized AI infrastructure, as projects like Render, Akash, and io.net have pitched themselves as alternatives to centralized AI infrastructure.
DeepSeek has no direct connection to crypto or blockchain and has deliberately avoided involvement with decentralized technologies. The company's trajectory is expected to inform how investors price AI-adjacent crypto projects and potentially set a benchmark for the valuation gap between traditional AI companies and tokenized AI protocols.
