DeFi Embraces Real-World Assets Amid Sector-Wide Decline
The DeFi landscape has undergone significant changes over the past year, with a notable shift towards tokenized real-world assets (RWAs). Despite a decline in the sector's total value locked, which slid 39% since January, RWAs have continued to grow, reaching a valuation of $34.18 billion earlier this month.
Bonds and money market funds made up the bulk of the action, while tokenized equities also saw significant growth. Large platforms such as Aave's institutional Horizon market, which allows professional investors to borrow stablecoins against tokenized Treasuries, credit funds, and invoices, hit a record $200 million in active borrows during Q1 this year.
Robinhood has also pushed tokenized stocks towards the mainstream, with its tokenized stock DEX crossing $3 billion in volume over a two-month period. This shift towards real assets is seen as a major development for DeFi, which has long struggled to provide returns tied to tangible economic avenues outside of cryptocurrency's own feedback loop.
Katerina Vdovichenko, co-founder and chief business officer of ORO, notes that while putting an asset on-chain is just the first step, maintaining a trustworthy link between the digital representation and the underlying asset as its state changes remains a significant challenge.
