DeFi Price Manipulation Exploits Reach Record High in 2026

DeFi lending protocols have been hit by a record number of price-manipulation exploits in 2026, with 32 incidents reported so far. According to data from KuCoin, this represents a significant surge in attacks, with roughly one in eight crypto hacks this year tied to price manipulation tactics.

The most notable example of this trend was an attack on Tectonic, a lending protocol built on Cronos, the blockchain operated by Crypto.com. An attacker manipulated the price of a thinly traded token, driving it up almost 100 times its value in just 20 minutes. This artificial spike allowed the attacker to post the inflated token as collateral and borrow an estimated $75 million from the protocol.

The fallout from this attack was severe, with Cronos halting its entire blockchain in response. This move highlights the systemic risks posed by price-manipulation exploits, which can ripple through an entire network's infrastructure.

Illiquid collateral is a key vulnerability in these attacks, as seen in many of the 32 incidents reported this year. When tokens trade thinly, it takes relatively little capital to swing their prices dramatically, making them susceptible to manipulation.
