DeFi Shifts Focus to Real-World Assets as Tokenized Economy Expands
The decentralized finance (DeFi) landscape has undergone significant changes over the past year, with the sector's total value locked (TVL) decreasing by 39% since January. However, one area that has continued to grow is the realm of tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), which reached a valuation of $34.18 billion earlier this month.
The growth of RWAs is not surprising, given the increasing demand for tangible economic avenues that offer returns tied to real-world assets. Aave's institutional Horizon market, for example, has seen a record $200 million in active borrows during Q1 this year, with deposits close to $600 million. Robinhood has also pushed tokenized stocks towards the mainstream, with its tokenized stock DEX crossing $3 billion in volume across a period of just two months.
While putting an asset on-chain is a crucial step, the harder problem lies in maintaining a trustworthy link between the digital representation and the underlying asset as its state changes. Katerina Vdovichenko, co-founder and chief business officer of ORO, notes that RWA conversations often focus on digital representation, but the real challenge is upstream.
The integration of AI has also started to make an impact in DeFi, particularly in terms of making complex products more accessible to users. AI agents have closed the gap in user experience, with cumulative payments made through the x402 protocol topping $50 million in May. The AskOro AI platform, for example, has seen over 2 million wallets interact with it, making on-chain transactions more simple and user-friendly.
